  • What are the essentials you need for a 4WD outback adventure?

Being prepared for any situation, especially in remote areas of Australia is really important. The 4x4 accessories you need will depend on how long you're going for and how far you intend to venture off-road. Think of it like having travel insurance. You may not use a winch, but in the case of an emergency, it gives you the peace of mind you need. To find out what recovery equipment you may need, browse the recovery page on our website or call or visit us at our Barnes St workshop in Tamworth.

  • Why should I take my 4WD to Tamworth 4x4 Pty Ltd rather than my normal mechanic?

We are experts in repairing 4x4 vehicles and our team of mechanics knows all makes and models inside-out. We have specialist scanning equipment, systems and processes to make sure your 4-wheel drive is ready for your next off-road venture.

  • What is a snatch strap?

It's like a giant elastic band that attaches to rated recovery points and is used to drag a vehicle out of sticky situations such as being bogged in sand or mud.

  • What's the difference between all-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive?

All-wheel drive is typically used when describing vehicles that are designed to stay on sealed roads. In an all-wheel drive, it's the front wheels that engage, while the back wheels kick into action when required. For example; brakes lock up or tyre skids.

  • What should I take with me on a 4WD trip?

If you are travelling solo, a shovel, winch and/or snatch straps are non-negotiable. Extra fuel, oil, spark plugs are also handy to have. To ensure you're fully equipped, your best bet is to call and talk to our friendly team. We have everything to ensure you've got the right spare parts and tools for any situation.

  • What is HDC?

HDC is short for Hill Descent Control. It means you can traverse downhill terrain without having to constantly brake and allows for a smooth, controlled descent. Using cruise control, the driver can increase or decrease the speed using the steering wheel or throttle.

  • What's the best piece of advice for a 4WD beginner?

Ensure your vehicle is serviced by a professional before leaving home and if you're unfamiliar with the area or a newbie, don't go off-road alone. Join a local Tamworth 4WD club or go with friends. Always let someone else know when you're leaving and what time to expect you back.

  • Do I need to deflate my tyres for sand-driving?

Yes, the best pressure for tyres for soft sand is 16psi. Don't forget when your tyre pressure is low, you will need to decrease your speed as well. If you find yourself getting stuck, let more air out. You can deflate your tyres to as low as 6–8psi, but once you've cleared the soft sand reinflate them to 16psi. Make sure you have a tyre gauge and a compressor, so you can easily increase the tyre pressure back to normal road pressure before you hit the road.
